Chapter Highlights

Pueblo County High School

Have you ever pondered the idea of how unsafe Halloween can be with the constant wishing of cars by kids walking the street looking for the next place to get candy? Studies show that children on Halloween are twice as likely to be hit by a car then any other day of the year. Now think of how many kids would get hit by cars if they were on streets that had no sidewalks and no street lights. Those circumstances almost double the amount of children getting injured or even killed by a car on Halloween. Our high school, Pueblo County High School, is located in a farming, rural community where there is a lack of sidewalks and street lights due to the distance the houses are apart from each other. This community or area of Pueblo County is called Vineland, Pueblo CO. In this area, there has been a population increase of 7.2%, which mostly consists of families with young or middle school-aged children. Therefore, more children are being put in harm's way when it comes time to trick-or-treating on Halloween. As the main leaders of our Deca chapter, we thought about how we could prevent these children from potential danger but also continue to give them the core memory of trick-or-treating. That's when the idea of Trunk-or-Treat popped into our minds. Not only would this be creating an event for all the kids within our community but also would allow the community to get involved with the planning and development of the event.
